Our Autumn Term topic is ‘Fire! Fire!’ This topic incorporates the Great Fire of London as well as The Gunpowder Plot and Samuel Pepys. We also learn about the elements of fire and fire safety. Local fire-fighters visit us in their Fire Engines and we also have our own ‘Great Fire of Wallands!’ During this topic we visit The Anne of Cleves House in Lewes. We also have great fun reading and learning about the structure of fairy tales such as Little Red Riding Hood.
Our Spring Term topic is ‘Animals and their Habitats’. Within this topic, we learn about life cycles, food chains, living beings, their habitats and how these are suited to them. In English we write calligrams and look at the features of non-fiction texts, to create our own reports.
Our Summer Term topic is ‘Our Wonderful World’. We enjoy learning about different cultures and places in the world and we also have our own ‘Our Wonderful World’ day where children spend the day exploring different countries and participate in craft/ cooking activities from that country. During this topic, we will take a trip out of school to explore our local area. We finish the year with a Year 2 picnic where we hope as many parents/carers can join us to celebrate the end of the children’s time in Key Stage One.
PE We have gym or dance on a Monday morning and outside games on a Friday afternoon. Please label your child’s PE kit (dark green t-shirt and black shorts).
Daily Every morning the children have maths and English lessons. They also have guided reading or independent reading time before lunch. The afternoon is dedicated to other subjects of the National Curriculum, such as Art, PSHE, etc. Our topic will guide our foundation subjects and will be linked into English and maths lessons.
