Year 2 is the final year of Key Stage 1. Children are given more responsibility and are increasingly taking more ownership of their own learning. At the end of this year, the children undertake SATs which are delivered in a supportive environment in small groups in order to minimise any anxiety children may feel.

Our Autumn Term topic is Fire! Fire! This topic incorporates the Great Fire of London as well as the Plague and Samuel Pepys. We also learn about the elements of fire and fire safety. Local firefighters visit us in their Fire Engines and we also have our own ‘Great Fire of Wallands!’ During this topic we visit The Anne of Cleves House in Lewes.
Our Spring Term topic is Rhythm of Life. We learn about British flora and fauna. We also have great fun reading and learning about the structure of fairy tales such as Little Red Riding Hood. Within this topic, we learn about Life Cycles, Food Chains, Living Beings and we also plant beans or sunflowers.
Our Summer Term topic is Around the World. We enjoy learning about different cultures and places in the world and we also have our own Around the World Day where children spend the day visiting different countries and participate in craft/ cooking activities from that country. During this topic, we visit a local forest Plashett Wood to make shelters. We finish the year with a Year 2 picnic where we hope as many parents/carers can join us to celebrate the end of the children’s time in Key Stage One.
During the warmer months, we have swimming on a Monday morning. We have gym or dance on a Wednesday morning and outside games on a Tuesday afternoon.
Every morning the children have reading, maths, and writing. The afternoon is dedicated to other subjects of the National Curriculum such as Art, PSHE, etc.
The children have access to learning activities on MyMaths, Lexia and Phonics Bugs where they each have an individual login.
