4DG: class teacher Danielle Ginn (Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs) supported by Jane Sparrow
4EM: class teacher Ella Mynott supported by Clare Emery
We begin the year with ‘Stones and Bones’ focusing on life in the Stone Age and changes from the Stone Age to the Iron Age. We will also be learning all about the human body in a Science week later in the term.
Spring Term moves us forward to Swords and Sandals (the Romans). We find out about the Roman Empire, the Invasion of Britain and what Roman life was like. We have a dress up day and also have a trip visiting Fishbourne Palace.
In the Summer Term, we ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ when we find out about the rainforests of South America. We look at animals, habitats, adaptation and people of the area and think about conservation issues. Children will take part in discussions and debates about deforestation. We visit a local forest, Plashett Wood, to make shelters.
Children will be issued with a homework menu at the beginning of each half term. There will be a choice of 9 activities; at least 4 activities should be completed by the time we break up for half term. Children may complete more than 4 activities if they would like to.
Reading records will be given to children to take home with the expectation that they read with an adult 3 times per week. Please write a comment in the record when you have read with your child.
Spellings should be regularly practised at home and children will be assessed throughout the year. Parents will be provided with a letter and explanation about the changes to our spelling system this year.
By the end of Year 4, children are expected to know all of their times tables up to 12 x 12. Regular practice at home will help the children to achieve this and improve their ‘personal best’ in our daily, 5 minute, times table challenge. TT Rockstars is a great way of encouraging children to practise; usernames and passwords will be issued to the children so they can access this at home.
We have gym, dance or fitness on Thursday afternoon and games on Wednesday afternoon.
Miss Mynott and Ms Ginn have PPA (Planning, Preparation and Assessment time out of class) on Friday afternoon which will be covered by class TAs.
Uniform – Please make sure that all school uniform and PE kit is clearly labelled as it helps the children to identify their own belongings. Please remind your child to bring a coat every day in the winter months and also please encourage your child to bring a named water bottle to school every day.
Medication – Please let the school and your child’s class teacher know if your child has any condition requiring medication, including allergies or asthma. If your child needs to be on a course of medication then please complete the relevant form which is kept in the school office.
