National Curriculum – A guide for parents – Year 4

Year 4 welcome letter – September 2017

In Year 4, the second year in Lower Key Stage 2, children take increased responsibility for their learning.

4DG: class teacher Ms Danielle Ginn (Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs) and Ms Layla Dyer (Fri) supported by Mrs Jess Underwood

4EM: class teacher Miss Ella Mynott supported by Mrs Sheena Ridley

Our Autumn Term is Me, Myself and I. This topic focuses on humans – their emotions and physical bodies. Our class text is a book called ‘Wonder’, a fictional book about a boy with physical differences which gives an opportunity for the children to think about difficulties others may face. We have a special ‘Body Parts Day’ when we carry out investigations.

Spring Term moves us back in time to Swords and Sandals (the Romans). We find out about the Roman Empire, the Invasion of Britain and what Roman life was like. We have a dress up day and also have a trip visiting Fishbourne Palace.

In the Summer Term, we ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ when we find out about the rainforests of South America. We look at animals and people of the area and think about conservation issues.

We visit a local forest, Plashett Wood to make shelters.

Class Routines

We have gym, dance or fitness on Thursday afternoon and games on Wednesday afternoon.

Swimming is on Wednesday for 4DG and Friday for 4EM.

Miss Mynott and Ms Ginn have PPA (Planning, Preparation and Assessment time out of class) on Friday afternoon and the children have their weekly spelling test then.

Both classes have their ‘Times Table Challenge’ (10 minute tables test) on Friday.

The children also have access to learning activities on MyMaths and Lexia where they each have an individual login.
